Whether you are a sailor, or someone looking for a tiny house sailboat on the water, this is the boat for you. Meet our sweet Clementine, a 1976 Cal 229 sailboat located in Racine, WI. Our family purchased Clementine in 2018 and started a complete overhaul of the boat. Most of the repairs and updates you will see took place between the winter of 2018 and the summer of 2020. We addressed both structural and aesthetic aspects of the renovation as we prepared to run a short term rental (Airbnb). We rented Clementine out in June of 2020 and enjoyed 5 successful seasons of hosting hundreds of guests. We also use the boat for our own family’s enjoyment and sail on Lake Michigan. She sails beautifully! Clementine is currently in the water and ready for you and your family to enjoy.
This boat was made by Jensen Marine. Cal made the 229 as an upgraded model and offered a wheel steering setup and 12 HP Farymann diesel engine instead of the gas Atomic 4 engine in the 29 model. More info: https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/cal-2-29/Clementine comes with a cradle (see pics).
Here is a list of many of the repairs and improvements made to Clementine:
Completely remodeled interior:
o All new 6” thick interior cushions with Sunbrella cushion material.
o We added a 110V AC/Heating unit which keeps the boat comfortable in all seasons.
o New headliner with LED lights.
o New countertop.
o New 110v fridge, microwave, and coffee maker.
o Reconditioned and fully functional original alcohol stove: Kenyon Homestrand Model 206 with pot holders and rails. I was able to purchase a rebuild kit from the original manufacturer and full recondition the stove.
o New main cabin curtains.
o New carpet on the “walls” of the inside of the boat.
o TV added to main cabin.
Paint:
o The entire outside of the boat was painted with Petit EZ Poxy Paint. This includes the top sides (hull above the water line) and the deck and cockpit.
o All non-skid areas were painted with Kiwi Grip non-skid.
o We sanded the entire bottom of the boat down to the gelcoat. From there we painted the bottom with 3 coats of Interlux 2000 barrier coat followed by 2 coats of Interlux Fiberglass Bottomkote Aqua bottom paint. Since the original repainting of the bottom we have added a fresh coat of bottom paint each year before launching to keep it protected.
o The engine compartment and bilge areas were painted with a 2-part marine epoxy designed for bilge areas.
Plumbing:
o All thru-hulls were removed, the holes were glassed over, and new thru-hulls were installed following updated marine standards.
o We used Groco triangle base seacocks and Groco mounting bases.
o All hoses were replaced with marine grade hoses (fuel, exhaust, waste, water supply).
o Toilet was replaced with a 12V electric toilet (Johnson Pumps 80-47435-01 AquaT Compact Standard Electric Marine Toilet)
o A 20 gallon black water holding tank was added.
Electrical:
o All of the wiring has been replaced with marine grade, tinned copper wire and heat shrink/adhesive connectors. This includes all battery cables.
o We added 2 new house batteries (which are also used to start the engine).
o We added a Blue Seas 110v breaker/distribution panel with ELCI and Reverse Polarity protection. All AC (110v) wiring is also new, marine grade, tinned copper wire.
o There is an upgraded electrical panel that has all of the AC and DC breakers and switches along with a battery meter.
o All lighting has been upgraded to LEDs with new switches.
o Running lights have been replaced with LED running lights.
Engine:
o Clementine’s 12 HP, diesel Farymann 30A engine (affectionately named “Bumble” because of the yellow color and sound that a single cylinder engine produces) has only ever been used in fresh water in the Great Lakes.
o We replaced the alternator and starter.
o We replaced all the wiring harness and connections, alarms and temperature sensor.
o This engine comes with a hand crank handle that allows you to start it by hand in case the batteries are completely drained.
o We added a tachometer to the boat which isn’t original but is nice to have.
o We’ve also replaced all the exhaust hoses with new marine grade exhaust hose.
Exterior:
o Companionway plexiglass and teak door added for convenience.
o Every piece of deck hardware was removed, each hole was countersunk, and everything was re-bedded with marine butyl tape to make sure that there were no leaks.
o The rudder was resurfaced and stabilized with additional layers of fiberglass.
o The steering cables were replaced.
o The transmission control cable and throttle cable were replaced.
o Many halyards and sheets were replaced.
o We added a bimini cover over the companionway.
o The sail covers were replaced with new Sunbrella covers.
o The cockpit cushions were replaced with new cushions covered in Sunbrella material.
o The mast spreaders were rebuilt with new wood and coated with marine epoxy.

Currently the boat sleeps 5 people. The main cabin can sleep 2 people when converted into the bed setup (it can also be set as a settee with the table in the up position). The port quarter berth sleeps one. The V-berth sleeps 2 people. The starboard quarter berth has the AC/Heating unit and doesn’t have a cushion/mattress. However, with a new mattress it could sleep another person.
All mattresses are 6” foam, and all the cushions are new as of 2019. We’ve also added Den-Dry mattress underlay to provide airflow under the cushions to prevent mold buildup.
Engine: Clementine’s 12 HP, diesel Farymann 30A engine (affectionately named “Bumble” because of the yellow color and sound that a single cylinder engine produces) has only ever been used in fresh water in the Great Lakes. When we purchased the boat in 2018 the engine was in great shape, however we took the opportunity to make some improvements. We replaced the alternator and starter. We also replaced all the wiring harness and connections, alarms and temperature sensor. This resulted in an engine that starts right away, every time, regardless of how cold it is outside (we’ve taken the boat out when it was in the mid 30’s with snow on the deck and Bumble started up with no problem.)This engine comes with a hand crank handle that allows you to start it by hand in case the batteries are completely drained. We’ve tested it and it works great as an emergency backup. We added a tachometer to the boat which isn’t original but is nice to have. We’ve also replaced all the exhaust hoses with new marine grade exhaust hose.
